💛 Visa preparation can feel overwhelming. We cried at the forms too — until we realised we could do it ourselves.
A real Vietnamese-Australian couple's bilingual step-by-step guide. Built from our actual lodged application. For straightforward cases. Save the agent fee — keep the savings.

I'm a Vietnamese-Australian, and I'm the sponsor for my husband's Partner Visa. My husband is Vietnamese — he used to live and work in Vietnam. We got married in Australia, and we are currently live and work together in Western Australia.
We are ordinary people. We are not lawyers, not Migration Agents — just a regular couple who walked the same road many of you are walking now. We know how stressful and lonely visa preparation can feel.
That is why we made this guide — to share our real experience, give you some direction on what to do, and lift a little of the stress off your shoulders. This is for reference only — every family's case is different.
▶ Follow our journey on @bestiewithdanaHiring a Migration Agent costs $5,000–$9,000 on top of the visa fee. Not everyone can afford that. The visa fee itself is unavoidable — but if your case is straightforward, the agent fee is the part you can save.
We were nervous about getting it wrong, so we hired an agent for peace of mind. The 820 was granted smoothly — but it took nearly 12 months of waiting. What hit us hardest was the cost. My husband was still new to Australia, I was managing everything on a tight budget, and by the time we paid both the application fee and the agent fee, every single dollar of my savings was gone. We struggled a lot through that period — but the visa still needed to be done, and we pushed through.
This time, we made a different decision. Instead of paying for an agent again, we did our own research — reading forums, watching videos, going through comments from people who had already walked this road before us. And we decided: we are going to do this ourselves.
The good news? There is no extra application fee for Stage 2. But let me be honest — we still stressed over so many small things. When you self-apply and everything is new to you, it can feel very complicated. We used the internet, researched every question we didn't know, and reviewed our application multiple times to make sure we hadn't entered anything wrong.
And then — less than 2 months from lodgement, we got the email. My husband had been granted the Subclass 801 — Permanent Residency in Australia. We could not believe it. We both burst into tears. All the hard work and all the stress — it actually paid off. 💛
We made this guide because we know how big of a deal finances are for so many couples. We hope it helps you the same way we wish someone had helped us.
📋 Is this guide right for you?
This guide is based on our real experience as a married couple who self-applied for the Australian Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) onshore. If your case is straightforward — genuine relationship, no visa refusals, no criminal history — then yes, this guide was made for you.
If you are applying offshore (Subclass 309/100), don't worry — around 80–85% of this guide still applies to you. The relationship evidence, documents, and lodgement process are largely the same.

Both visas test the exact same thing: is your relationship genuine? The self-apply work is almost identical. A few practical details differ.
This guide is for self-applicants AND anyone using professional help. Because the strength of your file is always your responsibility.
Not every agent tells you what evidence to add, what standard to aim for, or what a strong file actually looks like. You could be paying thousands of dollars and still end up with a thin application.
The Department of Home Affairs case officer does not know you. They only see what is inside your file. Evidence across all 4 pillars, organised and well-presented, is what makes the difference.
A truly thoughtful agent will guide you clearly. But how do you know who you have until your application is already lodged? Knowing what a strong file looks like means you can ask the right questions and fill any gaps yourself.
This guide shows you exactly what a strong file looks like — every evidence type, every category, every step. Whether you do it yourself or hand it to someone else, you will know what to expect and what to ask for.
"No matter who helps you with your visa — you and your partner need to make sure your documents are more than enough. The more evidence you can provide, the more you prove how real and strong your relationship is today. Your file will speak for you long after you submit it."

No. I am NOT a registered Migration Agent or lawyer. The guide is my personal experience self-applying for the Partner Visa 820/801. For complex cases, please consult a registered professional.
Self-apply makes sense when your case is straightforward: genuine relationship, well-documented, no past visa refusals, no character issues. If you have any complications, you should consult a professional.
Inside the guide there is a clear decision framework so you can decide for your situation.
There is no standard wait time. Every case is different. The 820 stage typically takes 12 months to 2+ years. The 801 (PR) generally cannot be granted until 2 years after the 820 lodgement date — but once you become eligible, processing can be quick.
Our 801 was granted in less than 2 months from lodgement. Yours may be different. Check the latest official estimates at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
The Department's visa application charge is approximately $9,000–$10,000+ AUD for the primary applicant (fees increase each year on 1 July — always check the latest at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au). On top of that: medicals (~$400–$500/person), AFP police check (~$56), NAATI certified translations (~$200–$400), overseas police checks if applicable, and possibly relationship registration. Total budget to plan for: approximately $10,200–$11,000 AUD.
If you self-apply with this guide, you save the agent fee (typically $5,000–$9,000).
Free Guide: A bilingual overview — self-check, eligibility, full budget breakdown (~$10,200–$11,000), the 4 pillars (3 hints each), previews of Sponsor/NAATI/AFP/Form 888, and a full 820/801 vs 309/100 comparison table.
Comprehensive Guide ($29.95): Goes fully deep across 13 sections — 40+ evidence types, E-Form deep dive (9 sections explained), Relationship Statement writing guide, Form 888 & Stat Dec, Sponsor & NAATI & AFP step-by-step, Photo Evidence Guide, Health Examinations, Lodgement checklist, After Lodging survival guide, post-grant checklist, 10 Common Mistakes, and Vietnamese-specific tips throughout.
The full price of the Comprehensive Guide is $59.95 AUD. For the launch period, we are offering it at $29.95 AUD — a $30 saving — because we want it to be accessible to couples who are already stretched financially by the visa process itself. This is a limited launch offer and the price will return to $59.95 once the launch period ends. One-time payment.

Yes — around 80–85% of this guide applies to offshore 309/100 too. The relationship evidence, the 4 pillars, Form 888, personal statements, and lodgement process are largely the same for both visas.
The main differences for offshore are: you must be outside Australia when lodging, there is no Bridging Visa A, and 309/100 is lodged as one combined application.
Yes — de facto couples can apply for the Partner Visa onshore (820/801) and offshore (309/100). The most important thing to know is that you need to prove you have been in a genuine de facto relationship for at least 12 months before you lodge. This means 12 months of genuinely living together as a couple.
The good news is that the evidence requirements — the 4 pillars, Form 888, personal statements, and documents — are largely the same as for married couples, so this guide can still be a helpful reference for you.
💡 Honest note from Dana: Our guide is based on our own experience as a married couple — so we have not personally been through the de facto process and cannot give specific tips on it. If you are a de facto couple, it is genuinely worth having a quick consultation with a registered Migration Agent or lawyer before you start preparing your application. There is no harm in asking — it can save you a lot of time and stress, and help you know exactly where you stand before committing to self-applying. Better to know early than to lodge and run into problems. Always verify at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
Yes 💛. Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2, NAATI translations, family visiting Australia, money transfers to support family overseas, Zalo call/chat logs as evidence — all included.
